A yacht escape hatch PLC job is not a guest-deck convenience leaf. Escape hatches are the way out when the stair is blocked, the way into a machinery space when the normal door is dogged for weather, or the trunk lid over a space that needs a clear vertical path. Class and common sense both care whether that leaf opens under the people who need it, and whether it stays pinned when nobody should fall through.
Escape sequences fail in quiet ways. A spring-assist that used to help now fights the drive. A rotary that fogged after a washdown. A local release that still works by hand while the page thinks the leaf is locked. Crew learn the workaround: kick the pin, pull the release, radio the bridge that it is open enough. That habit holds until the night the escape path is the only path. Then the finding has a name, and the surveyor writes it down.
Write escape states in English a night watch can act on. Commanded open is not confirmed open. Traveling is not clear. A leaf that stopped mid-travel because oil dumped is not an escape path. Timeouts that paint open are not confirms. If open is commanded and the end limit never arrives, stop and alarm. Do not leave the watch guessing whether the trunk is a hole or a lid.
Yacht hatch interlock and people under the leaf
Yacht hatch interlock work is mostly about people and gravity. A shell door can pinch. A hatch can drop a person through a deck, or crush someone standing in the trunk when the leaf comes down. People-under belongs in the logic, not only in a toolbox talk. Local deadman with a view of the coaming. Audible before motion. Area sensing if fitted, and if it nuisance-trips you aim it, you do not tape it for the season.
Fall hazard is the hatch-specific cousin of mid-travel honesty. Closed is not the same as pinned. A leaf that sits in the rebate while the pin is still out is a trapdoor with a green lamp. Someone walks across it because the page said shut. That is how a control problem becomes a person problem. Indication has to be independent of the command. A failed output should not paint a green closed. Local lamps at the station, plus the bridge or ECR mimic.
Permissions are boring and they matter. Deck should not hunt through guest graphics to see a hatch fault. The engineer should not need an interior login to confirm a pin. Wheelhouse remote that can raise while the local is already holding stop is how you get the remote taped over. Ask for the split in the spec: who can move it, who can only stop it, who can only see it.

Ask that in the first meeting. What still runs, and what is locked out on purpose.
Marine hatch automation when the OEM brain dies
Marine hatch automation fails electronics-first more often than captains expect. The leaf still raises. The cylinders still stroke. The pin hardware still seats when you feed it. The OEM board is a paperweight, the pendant has no spare, and the last specialist who knew that cover is on a boat in another ocean. An obsolete yacht hatch controller is a control job first. Keep sound iron. Replace the brain with hardware you can still buy from a locker you can walk to.
One named keep-mechanicals pattern is enough. On a 46m Trinity Yachts (2002) hydraulic control refit, Koopnautic and Quantum aged out. Tanks, pumps, and valves stayed. The brain moved to a WAGO PFC200, a Beijer X2, and IFM where the field needed a digital eye. That was not a hatch job. It is the same honesty: keep sound mechanicals, change the controller. A hatch quote that starts with new lids because the pendant died is the wrong invoice.

Fogged rotaries and jumpered deadmen get replaced as part of the retrofit, not in week four as an afterthought. Write the yard list as control-only on day one, or it will not stay that way.
What leaves the boat is the OEM cover, the dead pendant, the I/O that only talks to that one board, and any field device that already lies. What stays is the leaf, the cylinders or actuator, the pin hardware, and the manifold that still shifts when you feed it. A seized pin or a scored coaming is plant work. A lying page is not. Do not buy a new hatch for a timeout that painted green.

Commissioning is function-based. Unlock. Raise. Lower. Pin. Lock. Each local. Each remote. Combinations you actually use, because a yacht is not a lab bench. Raise from the local with a pad in the path, in the yard, and see whether the obstruction behavior is real. Indication versus a person standing at the coaming calling states on the radio. Power loss and manual overrides belong on that list. After the yard, the crew needs a name, not a generic inbox: who answers when a pin switch fails, where the spare proximity lives, which page still runs if the glass cracks.
What to ask before yacht hatch control work
Bring a short list to the meeting. You do not need to become a PLC programmer. You do need answers a chief can live with after Fort Lauderdale or Newport leaves the boat.
- Which openings are deck hatch, escape hatch, ER trunk, lazarette, or chain locker, and which states the page can actually confirm
- Pin out, pin in, traveling, open, closed: which are confirmed, and which are still a timeout

- Hydraulic or electric drive, and what confirm matches that drive when shared oil steals flow
- What happens on power loss, HMI failure, and a missing limit, including whether the leaf can free-fall
- Spare pin switch, spare coil, spare HMI: in a locker, or a story
- Who the crew calls after the yard, by name
If a vendor cannot answer those without inventing hull numbers or promising a full lid swap, keep looking.
