A windlass that crawls, then jumps. A crane that sits for a second and dumps the boom. A thruster that only has two moods: nothing, and too much. Captains call that a hydraulics problem. Half the time the tank is fine and the pump still makes pressure. The part the PLC is actually shouting at is the valve. They feel it every time they ask for a little and get all of it. Dirty oil will varnish a spool that was fine last season. Keep the mechanicals when they are sound.

What the PLC needs from a valve is boring and specific. Commanded versus confirmed. You asked the spool to shift. Did flow happen. Did pressure arrive on the work port. Did the cylinder make the limit. If you only have the output coil as proof, you are flying on hope. That is how a passerelle creeps while someone is standing under it. That is how a hydraulic door slams because the valve never seated.
One pressure confirm on the work side is enough of a sensor lecture. We already wrote how IFM yacht sensors put that analog into the PLC. The confirm is how you know the Wandfluh moved.
Connector corrosion in a Fort Lauderdale engine room will kill a coil that was electrically fine. Salt air. Heat against a tank top. A plug that was never clicked home. Yacht hydraulic proportional valve feel versus bang-bang
This is the part the watch actually cares about. Bang-bang is a switch. Proportional is a dimmer. You want bang-bang on a lock, a pin, a dump. You want proportional on anything the crew has to feather: crane slew, thruster, fin load, a passerelle rotate if that plank is hydraulic. Mix those up and the boat feels cheap even when the steel is fine.
A yacht hydraulic proportional valve that is healthy takes the handle in a straight line. A little command, a little motion. More command, more. A dead zone you can teach. What you cannot teach is a valve that sits, then jumps, or one that never quite goes to zero so the cylinder creeps on the hook. Crew will compensate for a season. Then they will stop using that function unless they have to, and the captain will hear about it from the bosun, not from a log.
Drift is the quiet one. Commanded closed. A dribble past the spool. The crane settles. The fin walks. The night watch finds a passerelle an inch off the stow they left. Command zero and feel whether the actuator is actually quiet. If it is not, stop blaming the page. Stick is louder. Varnish. A contaminated orifice. A solenoid that pulled in yesterday and will not today. The watch gets nothing, then a bang, then nothing. People get hurt on the bang. A windlass that starts late is how you take a chain across a foot. Do not talk yourself into it just needing a tap. Tap is a workaround. Workarounds become the procedure, and the next watch does not get the memo.
Dither, if the valve is proportional and the driver supports it, is how you keep a spool from sitting in varnish. Ask whether the last guy turned it off because it made a noise they did not like. That noise is often the valve staying alive.

A Wandfluh solenoid yacht coil is a part. It has a voltage. It has a connector. It burns, it opens, it shorts, it gets wet. The manifold can be perfect. The spool can be clean. If the coil is dead the PLC is shouting into a void. The watch sees a function that will not start. The panel shows an output. Nobody is lying. The coil is.
Keep a spare that matches. Voltage. Connector. Same family as the one fitted. Write which locker. A Fort Lauderdale distributor who stocks Wandfluh is a useful backup. The boat is the right place for the Saturday part. Newport the same, in season, when the window is shorter and the courier story is worse. Compare coil resistance to the spare before you condemn the valve. If they match and you still have no motion, you are past the winding.
You can still buy Wandfluh. Swiss production. North American stocking. Photograph the nameplate. Get the coil part off the valve, not off a drawing someone marked up twenty years ago. Coils get swapped. Nameplates get painted over. Trust the hardware that is on the boat. A spare coil in the locker is neccessary if you actually run the plant in season, not a nice-to-have sitting on a vendor quote. Kyle will ask where it lives before the yard window closes. Do not put a bang-bang driver on a proportional coil and call it commissioned. You will get heat, a dead winding, and a crane that only has two speeds: off, and sorry. Match the output to the valve. Write it down. If the valve has a manual override, know where it is, and whether the last yard left it half-stroked. A half-stroked override looks like a haunted plant. It is a pin someone forgot.
Marine hydraulic valve yacht faults the watch already knows
Stick, drift, and no spare cover most of the calls. The valve yacht crews already distrust is the one that worked on the last Med mooring and then sat through a Fort Lauderdale summer. Heat. Condensation. Oil that should have been changed. The first lift of the season is when you find out, usually with guests on the quay and a bosun who already knew.
No confirm is a cousin. Valve commanded. Nothing on the work port. Could be the coil, the spool, a ball valve someone closed and did not tag, or a pump on standby. You can keep a Wandfluh manifold that still strokes. The control still has to match the valve that is there. Wrong driver, wrong confirm, wrong spare, and you have a new panel sitting on an old lie.
Doors and passerelles show up here as loads, not as a second article. A hydraulic door wants a valve that seats. A boarding bridge wants a valve you can feather, and a pin circuit that is bang-bang on purpose. Windlass, crane, thruster, fins: same plant language. If a valve is worn, condemn the valve. If a spool is varnished, service it. If the nameplate is Wandfluh and the coil is still a catalog item, you are in a spare-parts conversation, not a rip-out. We will not pretend a datasheet logo is your class certificate. Lloyd's, DNV, Bureau Veritas each ask in their own voice. What they are not impressed by is an unsupported valve block and a handwritten bypass. Current production is what you can put on a purchase order after the yard has left.
Ask who stocks it in the US, the lead time for a coil versus a whole section, and whether the proportional driver lives on the valve or in the panel. Either can work. Mixing them without writing it down is how the next engineer buys the wrong spare and cooks a winding.
Bring a short list to the meeting. You do not need to become a hydraulics designer. You do need answers a chief can live with after the yard leaves.
