The text always comes at a bad time. You are ashore. Dinner, a haul-out meeting, sleep. Then the owner: “Is the boat okay?” If your honest answer is “I think so,” you have already lost the next five minutes, and maybe the next hour if you start calling the watch to reconstruct a picture you should have in your pocket.
Yacht remote monitoring is supposed to close that gap. Most of what we are asked to look at does not. Pretty tiles. A Wi-Fi light. Maybe a temperature that last updated this morning. Nothing you can use to answer the man who pays the bills, and nothing the crew will open twice. If the only thing the app can tell you is that the boat still has internet, you have a connectivity badge, not a picture of the vessel.
Why yacht remote monitoring fails the owner-text test
The dashboards that fail were built for the person who sold the system. They show that a hub is online. They show a lighting scene name. They do not show whether shore power is actually on, whether a bilge float has been cycling, or whether the interior has been sitting at 84 degrees since yesterday. Captains do not fail that test because they are lazy. They fail it because the tool they were given answers a different question: “is our cloud up.”
Crew learn fast. If an app takes a dozen taps to get to something useful, they stop opening it. Then the owner texts, and you are reconstructing the boat from memory and from whoever picked up the radio. Crew are not the problem. The tool is. Remote monitoring that nobody uses is the same as no monitoring, except you also have a login to forget at handover.
There is a second failure, quieter. Nuisance. A flood of low-grade faults that mean nothing underway and everything in a push notification at 0100. People mute those. Then they mute the next category. Then the one alarm that mattered sits in a pile. We would rather give you five things that change the answer to “is the boat okay” than fifty points that look impressive in a commissioning screenshot.
Fort Lauderdale boats sitting on shore power all summer have a different risk profile than a Newport boat in season with guests inbound on Thursday. The monitoring should still be the same idea. Power. Real alarms. Climate. Lighting and loads. Cameras you actually look at. If your current package cannot do those, stop calling it remote monitoring when the owner asks.
What captains actually need to see from shore
You do not need every sensor on the vessel in your pocket. You need the handful of states that change a decision: drive back, call the engineer, or go back to sleep. We keep that list short on purpose. If it will not fit on a phone the captain already carries, it will not get used.
Power first. Shore or generator, and whether something that should be alive is dark. A boat that dropped off shore power and is quietly eating batteries is a different text than a boat sitting fat on the dock. You want the state, not a vibe. If you have more than one incomer, you want to know which one is actually feeding the board, not which one is labeled in a PDF from 2019.
Alarms that matter. Bilge. High temperature. Low tank. A door or hatch left open that should not be. Not a flood of nuisance faults from a subsystem that has been noisy since the last yard period. If everything is urgent, nothing is. The alarm page should match what you would wake a watch for, not what a vendor’s default template thought was interesting.
Climate. Is the interior holding, or did HVAC drop out and you are walking back into a swamp. That is not a guest-comfort vanity metric when the boat is closed up in Florida in August. It is a mold problem, an odor problem, and sometimes the first visible sign that a pump or a breaker went. A cabin-by-cabin graph is nice. A simple “this deck is no longer at setpoint” is what you will actually check from a restaurant.
Lighting and loads. Did interior leave the boat lit. Leave it in guest mode for three days and you cook batteries and heat the interior for no reason. Load visibility also tells you whether a system that should be off is still pulling. Small. Stupid. Expensive.
Cameras you actually use. Passerelle. The deck around it. Engine room if you have a camera there you trust. Not twelve feeds nobody opens. Twelve feeds in a mosaic that looks like a casino pit, and captains reccomend the app to nobody. They go back to asking the dockmaster to walk by. One or two views that answer “is someone on the passerelle” and “does the ER look like an ER” will get opened. The rest is storage and bandwidth you will resent when the boat is on a bad SIM.
Power, alarms, climate, lighting: why five beats fifty
Integrators love points. Captains love answers. Those are not the same project. A monitoring system that tries to expose every input on a WAGO PLC will look complete in a meeting and feel unusable on a phone. The PLC can still have all of those points. The remote view should not. Filter hard. The onboard HMI can be deep. The pocket view should be shallow and honest.
This is where remote monitoring has to sit on the same platform as the rest of the boat, or it becomes another login. Lighting, climate, security, the alarm list. If those are four vendor clouds, you will not check four apps when the owner pings you. You will check none, or you will check the one that happens to still have a password in your notes. System integration is the unsexy name for “one picture of the yacht.” We would rather put lighting scenes, climate status, and the alarm list on the same crew login than sell you a fifth dashboard.
Hardware still matters. We build this kind of thing on industrial control we can support: WAGO on the logic side, Beijer when there is a local HMI the watch uses alongside. Same family of decisions as a hydraulic control job or a door-and-hatch monitoring job. Current production parts. A project file someone else can open. If the only path to a shore view is a consumer hub that dies with a firmware update, you will be having this conversation again in two years.
Class is not usually why owners buy remote monitoring. It is why you should still care how alarms are structured. Lloyd’s, DNV, Bureau Veritas conversations go better when the same alarm that hits the bridge also exists in a log you can pull. Remote view is not a substitute for the ship’s alarm system. It is a window into it. Do not let a vendor invent a second, friendlier alarm universe that disagrees with the panel in the ER. That disagreement is how people get hurt, or at least how they get surprised.
Cameras crew will open vs cameras nobody uses
Security systems on yachts accumulate cameras the way lazarettes accumulate line. Someone adds a view every refit. By year eight you have a grid, a password, and a deckhand who used to know which feed was the passerelle. Then that deckhand leaves. The new watch does not open the app. The owner asks if anyone was on the boat, and you are guessing from a dock camera that points at the wrong finger.
Pick the views that change a decision. Passerelle, because that is where people come aboard. A wide shot of the aft deck if that is where the boarding happens. ER if you have a reason (leak, fire suspicion, a contractor who should not be in there). Maybe the passerelle from a second angle if the first one blinds out at night. Stop there until those are reliable. A camera that is down, or that needs a plugin only one laptop has, is worse than no camera. It teaches everyone that the system is decoration.
Access control belongs in the same thought. Who opened what, and is a door still showing open. That is monitoring. A theatrical lock on a day head is not. If you already have door status in the automation (and you should, on anything that cares about watertight or guest privacy), bring that status to the phone. Do not make the captain open a second security suite to find out a hatch is still up.
How to make remote monitoring something crew will actually use
Put the same view on the phone the captain already carries. One login. No “download our portal, then wait for an invite, then install a VPN client from 2018.” If interior and engineering need different screens, give them those. Do not make the captain hunt through interior scenes to find whether the generator is running.
Train it like any other piece of kit. A 20-minute walkthrough at handover beats a 40-page PDF nobody reads. Scenes for interior. Alarm list for engineering. The captain gets the “is the boat okay” view. Write the logins in the handover notes the same way you write the rest of the boat. If a new second officer cannot get to power and bilge in the first hour aboard, the system is not ready, even if the vendor called it complete.
Permissions and notifications need an adult in the room. Who gets a push at 2 a.m. Who gets a daily summary. Who can command a load from shore, and who can only look. Remote control of lighting or climate can be useful. Remote control of anything that moves a person or a piece of deck gear is a conversation you have on purpose, not a default checkbox. Most captains we work with want look-first, command-second, and some things that never leave local control. That is sane.
Support is the other half of “will we use it.” A monitoring package with no one to call is a countdown to a dead tile. What to ask a yacht monitoring vendor before you buy
Use this as a filter. If they cannot answer it without a slide about lifestyle, keep walking.
- Show me the captain view, on a phone, in under three taps: power, alarms, climate
- Which alarms page onto the phone, and who decided that list
- Can lighting and loads be seen without opening a second app
- Which cameras are in the default view, and what happens when one is down
- Who supports it in Fort Lauderdale or Newport when the crew changes in season
- Does the remote view agree with the onboard HMI, or is it a separate story
That last one is the whole game. The owner-text test is just the public version of a quieter test: does the watch trust the picture. If they do, you answer the owner in a sentence. If they do not, you start a scavenger hunt, and everyone can feel it through the phone.
